HANDS ON WORKSHOP $40 for members / $50 non-members

From the novice beekeeper eager to absorb insights on fueling and igniting a smoker, comprehending the nuances of an initial hive examination, and delving into other pertinent topics, to the seasoned apiarist intrigued by exploring new methods and practices, this class will provide comprehensive guidance on conducting a series of thorough hive inspections. Bring all of your questions!

A full suit and gloves are required, a hive tool, water and a snack are recommended.

Have you ever wondered what a cut out is or how to go about performing one? Well this is a perfect opportunity to watch and learn as Jon goes into a shed that bees have moved into, cutting out the comb and removing all of the bees. Experience the joy of the unknown, uncovering a mysterious colony that lurks behind the walls, diligently working away. The length of time they have been there and the size of the colony will be revealed to both Jon and participants in real time! 

A full suit and gloves are required, a hive tool, water and a snack are recommended.

Class is limited to 10 participants.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY WITH MANY INCENTIVES TO CHOOSE FROM!

Volunteer at the LA County Fair, no experience necessary! In fact, this is one of the greatest ways to fast track your beekeeping knowledge, listening to experienced beekeepers educate the public, and asking questions during down time. Also, we have a list of incentives that is sure to please all. 

ALL volunteers receive a complimentary, limited edition 2024 BASC t-shirt in this year's color of the queen, green. If you have already signed up, please make sure we have your t-shirt size(s) and shift date(s) by sending us an emailYou also will receive a free parking pass and entry into the fair for each shift worked. That means you are welcome to enjoy the fair before or after your shift. 

If you work 3+ shifts you can choose from one (or more, see below) of the following:

3 shifts -  2025 Annual SINGLE Membership Waived - or -

5 shifts -  2025 Annual FAMILY Membership Waived  - or -

5 shifts -  Receive a NUC - or -

5 shifts -  $50 stipend applied to furthering your beekeeping education - or -

5 shifts -  A site visit by one of our experienced beekeepers to guide you on your journey

You are welcome to work as many shifts as you would like in order to receive more than one incentive, i.e. 8 shifts = 2025 Single Membership + a nuc, or 10 shifts = a $50 stipend and a site visit, or any combination from the list above. You are also welcome to combine family shifts to earn an incentive, i.e. you work 3 shifts and a friend or family member works 2 = a $50 education stipend, a 2025 FAMILY Membership, and so on. You do not need to be a member to qualify for the incentives however, we'd love it if you were! Please note, young humans are welcome provided they are of an age that can be helpful at the booth, like putting honey stick packages together for example. 

As you can see, we need everyone's participation to make the fair a success and raise money for our organization and, we want to show our appreciation to you for doing so.

The fair is open Thursday thru Sunday and on Memorial Day. Shift hours vary.

The 2024 Walking tour will be held on Saturday May 4th, from 10 am-3 pm, starting at the Laguna Beach County Water District. The buildings gorgeous “Mediterranean Revival” style building built in 1927 is now the permanent host venue for the Laguna Beach Garden Club Gate & Garden Tour. Luxury VIP Buses will transport you to the start of the tour where you will stroll through a masterfully curated set of gardens in local neighborhoods.

The festive event will offer artisanal margaritas and Mexican fare for sale, as well as free spectacular homemade baked goods and refreshments. In addition to being able to enjoy plein air painters in several gardens you can participate in a raffle of prizes from local artists and businesses. Participants wearing festive garden party hats will be entered into the hat contest. It has become one of the most popular events in our town with multiple years of sold out attendance.

BASC will be in attendance selling honey.
